Review: Shiver by Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliot

(Unbreakable Bonds #1)
by Jocelynn Drake, Rinda Elliot
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: October 27, 2015

Lucas Vallois is always in control. He’s building an empire in the glittering city of Cincinnati and created his own family from his three close friends. The self-made millionaire has everything he wants within his tight grasp. But his world starts to crumble after he’s jumped by a trio of thugs late one night after leaving a club. The warning is clear—give up his new property venture or end up dead.

Caving to the demands of his friends, Lucas accepts the help of bodyguard, Andrei Hadeon, as as he hunts for the source of this new threat. But as Lucas gets closer to uncovering the danger, he realizes the sexy Romanian bodyguard poses an even bigger risk to his carefully constructed world. Trapped by a need he never expected, Lucas must find a way to deny the shiver of longing he cannot control.

His brother. His warrior. His heart. Four friends. Unbreakable bonds.

Going in I knew this series came highly recommended by my trusted reviewers. But for the first 40%, I'm seriously doubting them. In the beginning, there are a lot of emphasis on the intense bromance between Lucas, Snow, Rowe and Ian. It took me some time to warm up to them, I wish there is a prologue to properly introduced how their friendships came about. I'm also wondering where the hell is the romantic interest for Lucas. Andrei is the bodyguard assigned to Lucas after an attempt of his life, but compare to the friendship between Lucas and the other three guys, Andrei's presence pale in comparison.

Andrei, an ex-MMA fighter and slightly younger than Lucas actually introduced much earlier than 40% of course. There was the lust at first sight and some intense eye fucking, but I'm not crazy about them both. I also don't know why Lucas keep insisting Andrei is straight without even clarifying it. Nothing scream straight to me. Anyway, once they gave in to their mutual attraction and start getting dirty with each other, I'm finally hooked. There is just something about their chemistry that drew me in.

Meanwhile, there are multiple attempts at Lucas's life with Andrei acting like the hero that he is. But I don't really care who wants him dead. All I care about is Andrei acting all heroic, Lucas worrying about Andrei and then Andrei wanted to sacrifice himself. It was all very intense, mushy and so much love.

Snow, Rowe and Ian are also such a great supporting casts that make me want to read about every single one of them. Snow is the broody one, Rowe is the funny one and Ian is the sweetheart. Even Hollis Banner, the cop with the persistent bug drew a few laughs from me.

I know some reviewers were disappointed that there isn't a declaration of love towards the end. I thought I would be disappointed too, especially after witnessing everything that Andrei went through. However, it turns out that I'm very happy with the ending. Sometimes action spoke louder than words. This is the first book afterall and we will be seeing more of them. In fact, I have Unbreakable Stories: Lucas right now and decided to spend the next hour devouring it.
