Five Minutes Longer
(Enhanced #1)

Genre: M/M Fantasy
Release Date: December 2, 2016

Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.

Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.

Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was fourteen and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.

Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success—and their lives are at stake—four weeks for them to survive.

We have a new FBI team that were filled with X-men, which guaranteed an interesting spin to the story. We called these X-men as Enhanced. But instead of being super cool and awesome with their unique abilities, they are the society pariah, treated even worse than gays in a homophobic town. What make it really sad was the fact that many newly Enhanced are kids and teenagers that are either shunned by the families or being locked up by the authorities.

Finn is a regular human being who aspire to be a FBI agent. But with his mediocrity, he didn't manage to go far, until the day he got a mysterious call to join a new team with Enhanced. He is in quite a conundrum as his teammates who are all Enhanced, didn't like having a human with them. Finn isn't a super agent, in my opinion is not overly bright or good in combat either, what make him such a great fit for the team is his empathy towards the Enhanced. He is also a bit of a damsel by keep getting into a situation that required others to save him.

Let's talk about Talon, who is Finn's partner and romantic interest. Talon is an asshole towards Finn most of the time. His action shows he cares for Finn and protective towards him, but his words is cruel. As a partner, he is a lousy one. Even Gael and Vance seems like a better suited partner to Finn. But I can understand where Talon is coming from and he had a lot of burden on his shoulder, keeping their teams secret and all that.

Romance wise, I find it lacks proper build up. Finn and Talon don't trust each other and don't communicate much beside of work and all of a sudden their started kissing and moved into the bedroom. I don't know where does the attraction coming from besides of the physical and lust at first sight.

As a first book of a series goes, things are still in shaky ground. The team is still new and they don't know whether is it going to be a success or not. Finn is a guinea pig and half the time he expected to be fired. Talon still haven't quite prove himself to me and he need to stop acting like an ass and feeling all regretful afterwards. Overall, it seems like a promising start and a bunch of interesting characters. Will be interested to see what happens next in the sequel.
