The price of survival…

Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.

There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.

My virginity.

A forbidden auction…

Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.

Except he’s playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.

THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.

Yet another virginity auction? Mankind really put too much fuss on a piece of hymen. Or maybe they are more interested in corrupting the innocent. The heroine, Avery's virgin status is an ongoing theme from the beginning till the end. She is as naive and innocent as I presume her to be. Growing up in a sheltered lifestyle under the protection of her influential father can make a woman in denial of a lot of things.

After her family's fall from grace, leaving her penniless with a huge medical bill and heavily in debt, Avery decided to deal with the devil and put her virginity on the line. There are times, I admire her tenacity, her desire to make ends meet despite the dire circumstances, but there are times she is just too easy for people to manipulate her. Her feelings for the man she is suppose to hate keep wavering until I can't even catch up with her state of mind. She hate him one day and then next day she don't.

Gabriel Miller is the kind of enigmatic hero with a mysterious past. I can't get enough of him. Not having any of his POV actually ramp up my desire to learn more about him. He seems like the bad guy in the story, but I'm just awaiting for the twist to be unveil. What is his motivation and why exactly is he planning for?

For the first book of a serial, is a great start. Too bad there isn't any hint or resolution. In fact, non of my questions are answered yet. Can't really justify if the outcome is worth it, but we shall see what Skye Warren will deliver in the sequel.
