Review: Crow ( Boston Underworld #1 ) by A. Zavarelli

(Boston Underworld #1)
by A. Zavarelli
Genre: Dark, Romance
Release Date: February 10, 2016

An Irish mobster. A missing friend. Two loyalties, ripping me apart.

I had a plan.

Get in, get my information, and get out. Easy, right?

Turns out, infiltrating the Irish mafia isn’t exactly what I thought it would be. I just wanted a soldier. Someone I could flirt with to get me in the door.

That’s when Lachlan Crow noticed me. Problem was, he wasn’t a soldier. No, he was next in line for the throne of the Irish underworld. And he was determined to hate me from the outset. My sob story about needing a job? Yeah, he wasn’t buying that either.

Too bad for him, I won’t let anyone get in the way of my mission.

Who cares if we have some kind of crazy chemistry? He’s the worst kind of wrong- and I would never in a million years be with a guy like him.

Because they took her from me, and I’m going to make them pay.

*** This is a standalone novel***

5 'mafioso' stars

This book has it all, romance, lust, sex, blood, suspense, action, revenge and betrayal.

It started unassumingly with a heroine who portray to be so tough and kickass that she can actually take down the Irish mafia's prize fighter.Unbelievable? I bet ye. Her first meeting with the hero was also rather anti-climatic because he was so emotionless and distant even with her being such a wildcat on the ring. Insta-lust? Nope.

I think that's what really drew me in and I find it so refreshing. They just don't register each other as potential mate. Non of those insta-lust bullshit that I'm so tired of reading.

Mackenzie Wilder is the daughter of a late Irish boxer and has been living on the street with her closest friend, Talia. When Talia went missing, Mack is doing all she can to search for her friend. But after so much roadblocks and indifference from the authorities, she decided to take matters into her own hand in infiltrate the mob.

Lachlan Crow, one of the higher ups in the Irish outfit, though I don't know his exact position. But he have a crew of his own and is the boss' right hand man. He is on his way to the top and no one is gonna screw that up for him, not even a mysterious Irish girl with an ambiguous past.

There are more than one mafia family that I have to contend with. The Irish, Russians, Italians and the Amernians. I can't believe they all congregate at Boston without killing each other off. Initially I find it confusing trying to keep track with who is who, but after awhile I manage to grasp the gist of it.

Mack and Lach both have secrets that they hide from each other. Mack's ulterior motive is to look for Talia, while Lach is trying to keep her until when the time is right to hand her off to the enemy. Obviously, they both try to keep each other at arms length and was extra suspicious of every single moves. Imagine two predators circling and waiting for the right moment to attack.

For such a circumstances, I'm worry that the romance might take too long to happen and when it did, is gonna be too late for me to feel emotionally invested. But I worry for naught because even with all these dark clouds hanging over their heads and the sense of foreboding that it will not end well, I can totally feel the emotion pouring through them subconsciously when they are together, even though they fight and denied it.

Mack is a tough cookie and there is a lot going through her head most of the time. She will reason with herself, justify what she is doing and give herself some good peep talk. But at the same time, she can't deny the invisible pull she had for the dangerous Irish man and couldn't stop caring for him. Surprisingly, I ended up enjoying her internal dilemma. Will she able to pull off what she came for?

Lachlan, oh man, I didn't expect to end up loving him so much. He seems so calculative, always with a plan and a mission. I don't know when he will decide to throw Mack under the bus. I know his lust for Mack runs deep, but I didn't expect him to be so protective and possessive of her. Is no secret that I love men who show off their inner caveman tendency and love selflessly. Lachlan has it all in spades and totally set him up as one of my favorite heroes. He was trapped between loyalty and his love for a woman. How will he choose?

Despite knowing this work as a standalone and Lachlan and Mack story will be wrap up nicely, I'm still a nervous wreck during the climatic chapters. I had no idea how things will work out for them because it seems so doomed. The author is totally brilliant for setting up such a nail biting suspense for us, although I'm quite taken aback by the final twist in the story. WTH? Totally didn't see that one coming. Anyway, it is a good suspense and I'm just so glad everything work out. I'm looking forward to the next one, which most probably will be Ronan's book. Can't wait!

A. Zavarelli is a romance book junkie, cat lover, and traveler when plagued by intense cases of wanderlust. She likes all things chocolate, books that come with warnings, and pretty much any kind of characters that are dark and gritty.
