Buy your own Amazon Kindle from Malaysia

If you are an avid reader like me, who reads hundreds of books per year (no joke), what better ways to save money than owning an ereader and purchasing ebooks. You can even help the environment by going green and save much storage space.

Normal paperback cost RM35 in Malaysia's bookstores, while an ebook from Amazon cost you around RM10 to RM20 depending on the author's popularity. Head over to Amazon and verify this for yourself.

Amazon don't ship Kindle to Malaysia directly (*rage*), so what I did was to engage a third party to be my middle man for shipment. If you google 'Ship from US', you will get a variety of company that provided such services to us poor soul.

I've only tried www.vpost.com and www.comgateway.com. I've heard that www.borderlinx.com provides the best rates around, but I've never try it myself. If you are internet savvy, the instructions that they provided in their website is pretty self explanatory.

Anyway, I shall list down some of the basic steps I did to get my Kindle to Malaysia.

  1. Set up an account with www.comgateway.com and provide them with your Malaysia address, of course.
  2. They in turn will provide you with an unique US address. After signing in, look at your top left corner.
  3. Go to Amazon website under 'My account' and update your mailing and billing address to the US address provided by www.comgateway.com. I'm assuming you already set up an Amazon account prior.
  4. Under 'Your Account', go to 'Manage Your Payment option' and set up your credit card details. I use my Maybank Amex without any problem. If you face problem with payment using your credit card, try calling over to your bank customer service and let them know you are trying to make online and international purchases.
  5. Now browse for the Kindle model you desire and click 'Add to Cart'. Then proceed to checkout and confirm payment. The shipping from Amazon to your US address should be free.
  6. It usually only take one working day for your purchase to reach your US address. Give it approximately 2 to 3 days for your shipment to show up at www.comgateway.com under 'Packages at US'.
  7. Make the payment for the shipping cost to Malaysia and your Kindle will reach you probably in a week time. Last year I paid USD25 to the shipment, I'm not sure about the current rate.
Voila! Is a piece of cake. If you still have troubles or you need any clarification, let me know. Also check out my post on Buying ebooks from Malaysia.

Really appreciate the tips as I looking for how to get a US address in a good way so that I can set up the Amazon account.
But I won't be ordering from US though as I found a good deal for Kindle in Lazada .
