Review: Eternal Kiss of Darkness ( Night Huntress World #2 ) by Jeaniene Frost

Eternal Kiss of Darkness

An immortal war has been brewing in the darkness . . . And now one woman has stumbled into the shadows.

Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she's only imagined in her worst nightmares.

At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he'd seen it all. Then Kira appears, this fearless, beautiful . . . human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.

But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

Urban Fantasy

This book should be read after Destined for an Early Grave and First Drop of Crimson.

Before I started this book, I never thought I will like to read Mencheres as a romantic hero. He came off as really really old, stoic, uptight, other-worldly, a mega vampire that feels more like a God. Shawna even go as far as to use to word 'asexual' that had me laughing so hard. So Eternal Kiss of Darkness came as a complete surprise to me and I love this book even more than Spade's one. And I love the heroine Kira even more than Denise and Cat!

Kira was a private investigator who happened to stumble upon Mencheres while he was being attacked. She thought she was rescuing him and later shocked to realize that he was a vampire. Considering Kira thought vampire was only a fictional figure, she get over her shocked pretty early and wanted to get on with her life and forget about everything that happened.

Mencheres's plan to erase Kira memory doesn't work out. Is he losing his touch of what? First he lost his vision, then now he can't even mesmerize a human? He decided to keep her for just awhile longer, hoping he can work his mojo on her.

“It was ironic; he held her captive, yet she’d captivated him.”

Kira was absolutely amazing. I guess I don't need to remind you how Cat's impulsive behavior gets on my nerve and Denise was a tad whiny. Kira had non of those problem and I totally love her. She was not as kickass as Cat, but she was more emotionally mature and strong. She makes Mencheres seems human rather than a godlike figure and she embraced him for who he is though she had no idea of his status in the vamp world. She wants him and she fights for him. I really admire this woman. She's such a great match for Mencheres.

"Don't tell me what I'm feeling isn't real, and don't even pretend that you don't want me, too."

Mencheres's state of mind in the beginning was heartbreaking. We knew about his evil wife Patra's fiasco and the aftermath of it. He lost his vision and his long standing feud with Radje, the Law Guardian was wearing him out. When a man as old as him said 'I'm tired', the situation was depressing. On the other hand, it was comforting to see that some of his friends, Vlad and Bones really do care for him. Bones and Cat made their cameos appearance with Vlad having a stronger presence.

Mencheres and Kira romance was slow burning and their scene was way more passionate. I was so hoping that they get more than one book. There isn't anything that frustrate me at all with their story. I've been loving this Night Huntress spin off so far. Can't wait to start on Vlad's story.

“Just because some of us make a mistake in love once doesn't mean we're doomed to repeat it.”
