Review: First Drop of Crimson ( Night Huntress World #1 ) by Jeaniene Frost

First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost

The night is not safe for mortals.

Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows – her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield – and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s dark past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness – and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who craves a taste of her.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human – even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the demon nightmare together…
Because once the first drop of crimson falls, they will both be lost.

Urban Fantasy

This book should be read after Destined for an Early Grave. Hell lot of spoiler we have here.

The humor and suspenseful action of Jeaniene Frost was back with Spade and Denise's story. We knew Spade and Denise already as Bones's and Cat's best friend, but never would I thought they had a thing for each other.

As oppose to Bones, Spade was a nobleman and a gentleman with a Baron title to boot before he was exile from England. He was honorable, proper, the kind who open doors for woman, mild manner and never raises his voice. He is ruthless killer though. He make Bones looks like an asshole. Don't worry Bones, I love you regardless.

Denise had been avoiding the vamp world after the death of her husband in Book 3. She believes her association with the undead led to his death. After finding out that her relatives have been dropping dead from sudden heart attack and witnessing her cousin dying in front of her, she was convince the attacker isn't human. After her failed attempt to contact Cat and Bones, she end up getting help from Spade.

We have a demon shapeshifter, Raum that wanted to track down Denise's ancestor who bailed on a deal. Raum decided to blackmail Denise while branding her with a demon brand. With Denise, we have a damsel in distress situation, which is something fresh because we had too much of Cat's being kickass and all that. Spade insinuated himself into becoming her protector and when things gets more complicated and dicey, he can't bring himself to walk away.

Both Spade and Denise have an undeniable attraction towards each other, but both had lost their loved ones and wary towards accepting a second chance at love. Denise being a tad whiny about her situation was understandable, but the way she tried to push Spade away repeatedly because of who he is was not so cool.

Most sexiest scene with Spade,

I like the twist in this demon situation and the changes that Denise experience. It sounds totally wacko and interesting at the same time. As if Cat being half breed freaky vampire isn't weird enough, Denise might just join the weirdo club.

This would have been a 4 stars read for me if not for Bones strong presence in the second half. I went all giddy fangirl when he made his appearance, all cocky and full of himself as usual. Although the limelight was not taken away from Spade, Bones was there as a strong supporting character in the mission to help Spade. Honorable mentioned to Ian, for all the laugh out loud moment.

Another winner from Jeaniene Frost and I'm looking forward to Mencheres's next.
